Causes of delayed menstruation
Although pregnancy is the most common cause of absence of menstruation (amenorrhea), many times women say they definitely are not pregnant and thus arise the following possible causes:
- Are you breast feeding your baby? Breastfeeding mothers often experience amenorrhea, but still can occur ovulation and pregnancy is possible even without menstruation.
- Are you experiencing an unusual amount of stress in your life? Emotional stress is another possible cause of the absence of menstruation, and the elimination of stress often triggers menstruation.
- What medications are you currently taking? Certain drugs including contraceptives (oral, implants and injectables), oral corticosteroids, antidepressants, antipsychotics, thyroid, and some chemotherapy drugs can cause amenorrhea in some women.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common form of hormonal imbalance that can cause amenorrhea, and other symptoms that can include the other extreme with excessive bleeding ( menorrhagia).
- "Eat a balanced diet? Women who are malnourished or extremely underweight often experience amenorrhea. This occurs in women with eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia.
- "Excessive physical training?, If you like dance or participate in sports, should know that vigorous exercise or athletic training can cause amenorrhea.
- Thyroid Problems? Millions of Americans suffer from thyroid disease and are undiagnosed, and this is another possibility that should be evaluated by your doctor.
- Do you have a chronic illness? If you have a chronic illness or has been sick for a prolonged period, your menstrual cycle can have a temporary delay, once self-governing body usually returns period.
