Probiotics, gastric bypass and rapid weight loss
The use of a probiotic supplement after surgery performed for the application of a gastric bypass, can help obese patients lose weight faster and prevent deficiency of vitamin B, according to new research from Stanford University.

The research showed that patients taking probiotic supplements after the surgical procedure by application of a gastric bypass surgery tend to lose more pounds than those who have not consumed.
Probiotics are the so-called "good bacteria" which can be found in fermented foods like yogurt, but you can also get in the form of dietary supplements that help in digestion of food.
"It was surprisingly significant weight loss experienced by patients who consumed probiotic in the control group," said Morton.
The study showed that in three months, the probiotic group showed a 47.6 percent weight loss, compared with 38.5 percent in the other group.
The study also found that levels of vitamin B-12 were higher in patients taking probiotics and this was a significant finding, because patients often manifest deficiencies of vitamin B-12 after a gastric bypass surgery.
Morton said that he now recommends probiotic supplements to their patients, coupled with plans to continue seeking ways to improve outcomes in the procedure.
Statistically, 15 million Americans are obese and morbidly bypass surgery is becoming an increasingly common treatment for the problem.
