Supplements for Weight Loss: CLA, is it really dangerous?
Lately there are many times where we talked about the several benefits we can provide the CLA or conjugated linoleic acid into our bodies. This has made this type of fatty acids are distributed in the form of nutritional supplements to be added in diets for weight loss.
Conjugated linoleic acid occurs naturally in very small quantities in humans and other mammals, as well as vegetable oils. But it is in ruminants which produces significantly, hence it is in the fats of these animals, and especially in their milk, where we can find them more abundant.
Note that the name of conjugated fatty acids refers to various kinds of isomers depending on their structure, such as cis-9, 11, who are the most abundant in nature and trans-10, cis-12, which are the most commonly found in nutritional supplements.
So far, CLA was attributed to a number of benefits to our body, such as decreased appetite and an improvement in the regulation of energy metabolism. This would translate into an improvement in diseases such as type II diabetes, overweight and obesity, arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, plus an anticancer action.
But it has been shown that dietary supplements enriched with CLA isomers trans cause considerable damage in the kidney of mice studied. The study was conducted by a team from the Cardiovascular Research Center of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the Catalan Institute of Science Cardiovasculares.Los results were published in Frontiers in Bioscience.
The study suggests that this type of trans fatty acid isomers can cause a range of negative effects such as inflammation, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, increased oxidative stress, atherosclerosis, and excessive accumulation of fat in the liver.
Knowing this, the best advice is to not overuse these products in a prolonged and uncontrolled as a method of weight loss, because, although its negative effects have not been proven yet in humans (for lack of studies, as they all have a duration of less than one year), it is very unlikely to be beneficial consumption. Another recommendation is to find out what kind of isomers are the products we eat, taking care not to consume CLA isomers trans type.
